According to the American Forensics Association, "forensics is a word rooted in the Western world's classical experience. The Greeks organized contests for speakers that developed and recognized the abilities their society felt central to democracy. These exercises acquired the title forensics, derived from the Latin term for ensis and closely related to forum. Because the training in this skill of public advocacy (...) the term forensic has also become associated with the art and science of legal evidence and argument. Our association researches and trains in the earlier and more global skills of argument and public advocacy."
Forensics has developed to describe Speech & Debate teams all across the nation, and ours is no exception. Though the term originates in debate and legal argument, it now encompasses many speech events, as well as numerous debate styles and formats. There are many different ways to become involved and to have something of interest to everyone!
The number of benefits to forensics? Too many to count. Just to list a few, here is team member Quinlan Cao talking about what speech and debate means to him. As a high school senior, Quin was named the National Forensic League's Student of the Year.
